‘Forest’ is a large interactive musical laser installation. Commissioned by and premiered at the STRP Biennale in Eindhoven, this giant interactive forest covers almost 450 square meters and is composed of over 150 musical ‘trees’ made of rods and lasers. The audience can freely explore the space, physically tapping, shaking, plucking, and vibrating the trees to trigger sounds and lasers. Due to the natural springiness of the material, interacting with the trees causes them to swing and oscillate, creating vibrating patterns of light and sound. Each tree is tuned to a specific tone, creating harmonious sounds spatialized and played through a powerful surround sound setup.

The installation is designed to bring out in adults those feelings of curiosity and wonderment which are so alive and evident in children.

Forest exists as a tourable interactive installation, open to the public, and also a performance. The performance premiered at the STRP Biennale opening, consisting of 12 local children between the age of 8 and 12 years old. They were choreographed to move around the space, strumming and triggering the lasers and sounds.

How Grand Central Marketing Brought Food Network to Life at the SoBe Wine & Food Festival.

The South Beach Wine & Food Festival in Miami is a star-studded event featuring the world’s most prominent names in cuisine and spirits, so you know Food Network needed to make a splash with its sponsorship presence onsite. The team at Grand Central Marketing was up to the challenge, helping the client create a book-signing tent for the networks star chefs (think names like Rachael Ray, Morimoto and Emeril Lagasse) that incorporated a true Miami look and feel, while at the same time was designed to handle the huge crowds at SoBe Wine & Food.

Food Network wanted to create a space that would stand out from the crowd at the event, but that was no easy challenge. Event sponsors were all given identical white tent footprints along the beach, and it was up to creatives to bring the space under and around the tent to life—kind of like a stage design project.

Food Network’s creative team designed the space, decided on the color palate and branding guidelines, then GCM took over to produce the event onsite. This collaboration yielded killer results, but setting up on the beach presented its own set of challenges.

Setting up on shore

“There are a whole set of issues when trying to do anything on the beach, between the wind and the sand and extreme sun. And it’s not just dealing with the elements, but also the weight and the materials that we’re using have to be flexible, lightweight and easy to pack and ship,” says Grand Central Marketing president & ceo Matthew Glass.

The tent environment also needed steady footing on the shifting sands, so GCM first laid down a deck that supported a flooring system. The team spent a good part of its setup day leveling the sand in the area before the deck was installed, to ensure that everything would be flat and ready to go for the duration of the festival.

Crowd control

With a full lineup of Food Network celebrity chefs on hand for signings during the event, the team took crowd control seriously from the start. A haphazard queuing schematic was not an option, as neighboring sponsor tents flanked the footprint.

“It’s a very crowded event, and the chefs and authors really draw a big crowd. There were hundreds of people everyday waiting to meet them, so we created three lines to break it up because we didn’t have a lot of room on either side. We put umbrellas there so people would have some shade while they were waiting,” Glass says,

The tent environment also proved to be flexible when Emeril Lagasse invited members of the crowd up onto the deck with him during his signing event. Though the space wasn’t designed for that use, it handled the situation just fine.

Design details

The look and feel of the space itself took inspiration from the event’s locale, and incorporated the natural beauty of the event’s beachfront surroundings. All of the elements used in building out the space had to be tough and sturdy, however, in order to handle the potential for strong winds.

“There was a hole cut in the back wall and you could see the ocean through it, so it resulted in a very open, light and airy feel. It was a part of the whole mood and you could see the horizon off in the distance—it brought the distance into the foreground. It has a very classic and sophisticated feel to it, and the whole thing was very Miami—very light and summery,” Glass says.

All of the graphics used in the space came from the Food Network team, and fabric and acrylic materials featuring different textures were leveraged to create the round, arching wings on the side of the tent.

The hole in the back that provided the ocean view also acted as a wind slot, which allowed air to flow through the tent, while fans mounted into the top of the tent frame helped circulate the air inside. At night the space was cleaned down to keep the white surfaces bright and shiny, then zipped up and closed on all four sides.

“It was definitely the standout set of the festival, and that for us is the most rewarding thing to hear,” Glass says.

Next time your significant other won’t keep his mouth shut during the big game, you can keep him quiet with a roll of New York Yankees-themed duct tape now on sale at a Duck Tape pop-up store in Times Square.

The pop-up store, at 1411 Broadway between 39th and 40th streets, is selling duct tape printed with dozens of patterns, from local sports teams to One Direction, SpongeBob SquarePants, and tie-dye and floral prints through next Sunday, April 28.

“I don’t even know what I’m going to do with this,” said Juwita Seman, an engineer in Midtown, holding aloft a pink Hello Kitty roll. “I just love Hello Kitty.”

Duct tape flowers, purses, and shoes strewn about the store offered some ideas. Mannequins stood in the windows, wearing dresses constructed from duct tape by “Project Runway” contestants, plus a gown and suit that a high school couple wore to prom.
